What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a skilled treatment used to help individuals with special needs achieve independent function in every day life activities. Occupational therapists work with people with a wide range of challenging health conditions and motor skill impairments. The overall goal of occupational therapy is to improve or develop strength and motor skills to achieve higher levels of independent function. Otherwise, creative solutions or compensatory strategies can be taught for carrying through with life activities.

What is hippotherapy and how does it work?

Hippotherapy utilizes the movement of the horse as part of a integrated treatment approach to achieve functional outcomes. We use it because it is fun, enjoyable and therapeutically challenging!

The horse's gait elicits reciprocal movement responses from the patient which are similar to those of the human pelvis (our base for movement). By grading these responses, the therapist can best establish improved motor patterns as foundations to improved neurological function and sensory processing. The end goal is improved function in everyday life activities!
